Thread is a standards-based IPv6-based mesh networking protocol developed for simply and securely connecting products around the home to each other, to the internet and to the cloud. Thread networks are simple to install, highly secure, scalable to hundreds of devices and developed to run on low-power IEEE 802.15.4 devices.

Built on open standards and with IPv6/6LoWPAN protocols, Thread’s approach to wireless networking offers a secure and reliable mesh network with no single point of failure, simple connectivity and low power.

The Thread networking stack
The Thread standard is a stack built on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 PHY and MAC. The Thread stack has built-in features for IP routing, 6LoWPAN, security and commissioning.

The advanced nRF52840

The nRF52840 is the high-end member of the nRF52 Series SoC family. It meets the challenges of sophisticated applications that need protocol concurrency and a rich and varied set of peripherals and features.  It offers generous memory availability for both Flash and RAM, which are prerequisites for such demanding applications.

The nRF52840 is fully multiprotocol capable with full protocol concurrency. It has protocol support for Bluetooth 5, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Zigbee and other 802.15.4 stacks, ANT and 2.4GHz proprietary stacks.

nRF5 SDK for Thread and Zigbee

nRF5 SDK for Thread and Zigbee is a complete solution  for building Thread 1.1 and Zigbee 3.0 certified products. It utilizes the the multiprotocol capabilities of the nRF52840 wireless SoC. This enables single-chip application development supporting both Bluetooth Low Energy and Thread or Zigbee, concurrently.

nRF Thread topology monitor

nRFThread topology monitor is a cross-platform desktop tool that enables developers to visualize Thread mesh network topology in real time.

nRF Thread Topology Monitor uses diagnostic mechanisms of the Thread protocol to retrieve information about routing tables of each Thread Router currently attached to the network. The tool can also identify a particular device in the network using LEDs by interacting with the Thread BSP solution. You may assign a custom label to a Thread node and store it in persistent memory on the PC side, which helps to track topology changes.
